Space Observatory

Purpose

SpaceObservatory consists of three websites dedicated to topics of Sun, Earth and Planets. The project started in late 2014 and demonstrates how publically available scientific data can be reqularly acquired, treated an displayed to the user in almost real time.

It is work in progress and will incorporate new features, datasources and dataformats over time.

Technology

We see here version 4.0 of ofehr.media. The websites are running inside a VirtualBox virtual machine on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

The application uses Yaws with Erlang and Phoenix Framework with Elixir for the front-end behind an Nginx as loadbalancer and reverse proxy. In the background Postgresql and Python do the heavy lifting and aquire, transform and analyse the data which comes from many different sources and is in many different formats.

For working with GIS data and to produce static maps, Mapserver is used and data is transformed into the GeoJSON format.

RabbitMQ allows sending notification to Twitter in an asynchronous way, without blocking the data update process.

Data for Ecuador, Iceland, Mexico, Philippines, Switzerland and Turkey is no longer acquired, as we have found it too tedious or cumbersome to do given the form in which these sites provide their data to the public. We keep the references here for completeness.

All of the data is aquired, transformed, stored and displayed automatically, which results in a low-maintenance Websites with no human intervention necessary. Of course, we have to monitor the sites. In addition, data analyses on the collected data can be run manually on demand.

Bots

When ofehr.media acquires data it does so by the use of bots. These bots identify themselves as "SpaceObservatory/x.y" for production and as "Mozarella/x.y for development and test. Here, x.y. represents the version number of the bot software.

These bots do not scan or index websites but acquire specific pre-defined data. Should this cause problems for you please let us know. Contact information can be found in the footer of every page.
